Effect of methylprednisolone on perivascular pulmonary edema, inflammatory infiltrate, VEGF and TGF-beta immunoexpression in the remaining lungs of rats after left pneumonectomy BJMBR
Guimarães-Fernandes,F.; Samano,M.N.; Vieira,R.P.; Carvalho,C.R.; Pazetti,R.; Moreira,L.F.P.; Pêgo-Fernandes,P.M.; Jatene,F.B..
Pneumonectomy is associated with high rates of morbimortality, with postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema being one of the leading causes. An intrinsic inflammatory process following the operation has been considered in its physiopathology. The use of corticosteroids is related to prevention of this edema, but no experimental data are available to support this hypothesis. We evaluated the effect of methylprednisolone on the remaining lungs of rats submitted to left pneumonectomy concerning edema and inflammatory markers. Forty male Wistar rats weighing 300 g underwent left pneumonectomy and were randomized to receive corticosteroids or not. Methylprednisolone at a dose of 10 mg/kg was given before the surgery. After recovery, the animals were sacrificed at 48...

Effect of surgical treatment on the cellular immune response of gastric cancer patients BJMBR
Barbieri,C.; Fujisawa,M.M.; Yasuda,C.L.; Metze,I.L.; Oliveira,E.C.; Santos,L.M.B.; Lopes,L.R.; Andreollo,N.A..
Patients with gastric cancer have a variety of immunological abnormalities. In the present study the lymphocytes and their subsets were determined in the peripheral blood of patients with gastric cancer (N = 41) both before and after surgical treatment. The percent of helper/inducer CD4 T cells (43.6 ± 8.9) was not different after tumor resection (43.6 ± 8.2). The percent of the cytotoxic CD8+ T cell population decreased significantly, whether patients were treated surgically (27.2 ± 5.8%, N = 20) or not (27.3 ± 7.3%, N = 20) compared to individuals with inflammatory disease (30.9 ± 7.5%) or to healthy individuals (33.2 ± 7.6%). The CD4/CD8 ratio consequently increased in the group of cancer patients. The peripheral blood lymphocytes of gastric cancer...

Implication of the host TGF beta pathway in the onset of symbiosis between larvae of the coral Fungia scutaria and the dinoflagellate Symbiodinium sp (clade C1f) ArchiMer
Berthelier, Jeremy; Schnitzler, Christine E.; Wood-charlson, Elisha M.; Poole, Angela Z.; Weis, Virginia M.; Detournay, Olivier.
Dinoflagellate-cnidarian associations form both the trophic and structural foundation of coral-reef ecosystems. Previous studies have highlighted the role of host innate immunity in regulation of these partnerships. This study reveals the presence of a transforming growth factor beta (TGF beta) in the coral Fungia scutaria that clusters with TGF beta sensu stricto (ss) from other animals. In functional studies of F. scutaria larvae, we show that (1) TGF beta ss mRNA is expressed during early stages of development prior to the onset of symbiosis; (2) apparent interference of the TGF beta pathway impairs the onset of symbiosis; and (3) this effect is associated with an increase of cytotoxic nitric oxide secretion, an immune response. This work highlights the...
